Country Fried Steak Strips

This dish is inspired by Sean’s favorite breakfast –  fried steak with country gravy, scrambled eggs and hash browns. Let me be clear, this is a restaurant only favorite, as we don’t find a lot of time to make fun breakfasts, and usually aren’t in the mood to do it on the weekends. Simple solution: reinvent the dish to be dinner rather than breakfast. We’ve never seen country fried steak in the form of strips or fingers before, but thought it would make perfect sense and can be perfectly paired along with country gravy dipping sauce.

We knew we were on to something with these from the first time we made them. When you tenderize the meat properly and get a nice crust built up, you will undoubtedly fall in love with these, too. It might not have the eggs and hash browns to go along with it, like I’ve always preferred, but combined with our macaroni and cheese and asparagus sides I was sold on these.

See what you think, I’m sure you will be as blown away as we were!

Tenderize the steak – we use this tenderizing hammer pictured below from Amazon.

  1. Cut steak into strips.
  2. Season generously with salt and pepper on both sides
  3. Fill you frying pan with 1/4″ of vegetable oil covering the bottom.
  4. While the oil comes up to temperature, combine your eggs and heavy whipping cream in a bowl and mix up.

  6. Dry off steak, dip into egg mixture and then into the flour mixture.
  7. Repeat step 7.
  8. Fry steak strips for 4 minutes on each side. Let rest and drain grease on a strainer upon completion.
  9. While cooking the steak, follow the 3 simple directions on the back your favorite gravy mix to have prepared just in time for the steak strips to finish resting. Our favorite is Pioneer country gravy. There’s lots of recipes for homemade country gravy but we like to keep things as simple as possible!
