Did you know that there are 160,000 different species of butterflies? And because they’re so beautiful, butterflies are a popular theme for decorations. But before you head to the store and buy a bunch of expensive products, check out these 3 cool butterfly crafts you can easily make yourself with plastic bottles!
1. Butterfly Mobile
You’ll Need:
- plastic bottles
- box cutter
- butterfly outline
- permanent marker
- scissors
- nail polish
- nylon thread
- white cardboard for the clouds
- wooden sticks to hang the mobile
Here’s How:
1. Cut off the upper and the lower parts of the plastic bottle. Cut the remaining center piece vertically and roll it out.
2. Place the butterfly outline under the plastic and use a permanent marker to trace the outline on the plastic.
3. Cut out the plastic butterfly and paint it with nail polish. Repeat steps 1 to 3 with more plastic bottles so you have several butterflies.
4. Make a cross from two wooden sticks, tie nylon thread to the sticks, and tape the butterflies to the thread. Cut some clouds out of white cardboard and also tape them to the thread.
2. Butterfly Hair Clip
You’ll Need:
- wire
- beads
- plastic bottle
- box cutter
- butterfly outline
- permanent marker
- scissors
- nail polish
- permanent marker
- hot glue gun
- barrette
Here’s How:
2.1 Cut 2 equal-sized pieces of wire and thread the beads on them. Knot the wire on one end and fan the pieces out on the opposite end to make the antenna.
2.2 Make a butterfly like you did in Craft #1 and glue the bead antenna on the front and the barrette on the back.
3. Butterfly Bell Jar
You’ll Need:
- plastic bottles
- box cutter
- butterfly outline
- permanent marker
- scissors
- nail polish
- bell jar
- moss
- twigs

Make multiple butterflies like you did in Craft #1, Place moss on the bottom of the bell jar, insert some twigs upright in the moss, and attach the butterflies to the branches.
